Arsene Wenger has confirmed an announcement over his future will now be made after next weekend’s FA Cup final against Chelsea at the earliest.
Regardless of events this weekend, Arsenal can still end their season with a major trophy if they can beat champions Chelsea next Saturday, but Wenger insists no decision on him signing a new deal will be made until after the Wembley showdown. Arsenal end their Premier League campaign against Everton at the Emirates on Sunday hoping a win, combined with Liverpool dropping points at home against already relegated Middlesbrough, will result in unlikely Champions League qualification.
Asked at a pre-match news conference whether this weekend would mark his final game in charge at Emirates Stadium, he said: ‘Of the season, yes.’
Pressed on whether it would be his last game ever in north London he replied: ‘I cannot tell you that.
‘After that, what happen to me is less important. I’m here to serve the club and the best way to do it is to win the next game.’‘I think what is most important for us is to win the football game that we play on Sunday.
Questioning then turned towards Arsenal’s impending board meeting at which majority shareholder Stan Kroenke, who is set to fly in from America, will be in attendance.
‘I think it’s after the FA Cup,’ Wenger said, before confirming ‘things would be finalised’.
‘Of course I will be there and at the moment we should focus on the short term and what’s going on this Sunday and in the cup final.
