Gennady Golovkin v Billy Joe Saunders: Coach reveals why GGG won’t fight unbeaten Brit
GENNADY GOLOVKIN wants to focus on preparing for a mega-fight with Canelo Alvarez instead of fighting Billy Joe Saunders, according to his head trainer Abel Sanchez.
‘GGG’ is rated as one of the world’s top pound-for-pound boxers and is unbeaten in his 37 professional fights.
Golovkin is the reigning WBA, WBC and IBF world middleweight champion and has said he wants to unify the division’s belts, a feat that would require him to lift the WBO title.
And the Kazakh mentioned the current WBO champion Saunders in the ring after his latest fight, a decision victory over Daniel Jacobs.
Negotiations were initiated between the two fighters over a June unification fight that would see 24-fight unbeaten Saunders likely fight outside the UK for the very first time in his professional career.
However, it now appears he will take the summer off to focus on a September super-fight with 48-1-1 light middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez after Sanchez revealed that Golovkin was hurt more by the Jacobs bout than first thought.
“He was sore,” Sanchez told Yahoo.
