Spal to make Serie A return after 50 years
Spal will be making return to Italian top flight after 50 years of absence and are potentially just one win away from returning.
The Emilia-Romagna-based was founded in 1907 but after running into bankruptcy, it was refounded in 2005 but again experienced the same financial misfortune, and finally reorganized in the summer of 2012, to begin their journey with Serie D.
After making giant stride in the Serie A, they got relegated in the 1967-68 season, and spent many of the subsequent years in the lower divisions.
The club gained promotion to Serie B for the first time since 1992-93 after winning the North/Central division of the Lega Pro, but with the signing and arrival of players such as on-loan Gianmarco Zigoni (Milan), Cristiano Del Grosso (Atalanta), Kevin Bonifazi (Torino), the club have proved unbeatable.
Leonardo Semplici’s side have just one win to secure their promotion after garnering 73 points from as many games with four games to go.
They are top of the table in the second division and currently sit eight points ahead of Verona, who have a game in hand, and third-placed Frosinone who both sit on 65 points.
Spal face Spezia in Week 39 and a win will guarantee them automatic promotion hoping Frosinone lose to Salernitana.
Frosinone have a chance to get an automatic promotion should they finish the season nine or more points clear of fourth-placed Cittadella.
