THIS evening in Calabar, a solemn procession will be activated as Senator Florence Ita Giwa superintends over a candle light ceremony in memory of those who lost their lives while watching their darling club Manchester United against Anderlecht in an Europa League quarter final clash. Unconfirmed reports have it that over 30 fans were electrocuted when a live wire fell on the roof, a viewing centre 28 minutes into the ill fated match at Nyakasang area of Atimbo in Calabar. Ita Giwa, Mama Bakassi as she is fondly called was a study in sorrow as she wept bitterly while visiting the scene of the disaster. Apart from visiting the wounded in the hospital and helping out with the widows, she has decided to erect a ”veritable viewing centre” that will also serve as a memorial to all those who lost their lives. ”What I saw was not a viewing centre in the true sense of the word. I live in Lagos and I am aware that what passes as viewing centres are huts and contraptions that lack basic human comfort. This was not different. ”I am reaching out to Nigerians and others all over the globe to join me in erecting a veritable viewing centre that will also double as a sports centre for our teeming youth to get themselves engaged in their free time” Senator Ita Giwa prayed. While that is in the long term, she has finalized plans to hold a candle light procession in remembrance of the dead today. ”We are inviting all and sundry to turn up, sports personalities, people in government, market women and the generality of the public to come together and join hands to lift the spirit of those who have been affected by this tragedy. ”The programme will start at 4:00 pm with a visit to the Teaching Hospital where some injured are admitted. Leading the “Concerned Mothers” they will then proceed to the Nyakasang Community for the Candle Light procession at sunset.
