He’s competed in a Sumo match with the legendary Akebono at WrestleMania, dressed as an adult baby, diaper and all, and even worn drag, during his time in the WWE.THE Big Show has done some crazy things in his wrestling career.
But perhaps the biggest moment of his career was his match with boxing legend Floyd Mayweather at WrestleMania.
The pair went toe to toe inside the wrestling ring at WrestleMania 24 in 2008.
To set up the match the two met in the ring at the “No Way Out” event the month prior, where The Big Show knew he had to do something spectacular to capture the audience’s attention and get them interested in the WrestleMania showdown.
Many felt that a showdown between a seven foot giant and the reigning undisputed welterweight champion wasn’t enough to get fans to tune in, so The Big Show told Mayweather to do something drastic.
“I told Floyd to break my nose,” The Big Show told the Sam Roberts Wrestling Podcast. “If he didn’t do something huge that night, our angle was dead in the water.”
“It’s just the size disparity, I was trying to do something different than a normal wrestling angle, so this is an opportunity with a trained professional, who I trusted, and is one of the greatest fighters who ever boxed (to do something special).
“I’d spent a whole year messing around the ring boxing, so I knew he knew how to break my nose without shoving it through the back of my head. It was a left hook, it was awesome.”
The stunt went off without a hitch and had the desired impact, as suddenly fan interest in the pair’s showdown spiked. But The Big Show did reveal that he gave the boxing star a warning before he went through with the stunt.
“There’s a way he could have broken my nose that would have sprayed it all over my face, I mean, I can do that. I can hit someone in the nose and spread it all over their face — Floyd did it and it was fine,” Big Show said.
“I told him when you do that, make sure you run. Because they’ll be about five or ten seconds that I won’t be in my right frame of mind.
“I’m human, when that blood hits the back of your throat, you’re pissed.”
After smashing the Big Show’s nose in the ring, Mayweather and his entourage promptly escaped, hopping the ringside barricade and racing away, with The Big Show’s warning still ringing in their ears.
But one man was brave enough to confront the angry and bleeding giant, son of WWE owner Vince McMahon, Shane.
“I know when I hopped the railing and went after his crew, the one guy that had the balls to come up to me was Shane (McMahon) and Shane looks at me and goes ‘are you OK’, and then goes ‘that was awesome!!!’,” Big Show recalled.
It may seem bizarre that a wrestler would go to this extent purely to ensure fans are hyped about an upcoming match or to simply add to a storyline, but the WWE star said such an act is relatively common place in the Vince McMahon led organisation.
“I think that’s a thing a lot of fans don’t understand, our guys give a lot and not just for the match that they see. It’s the prep time that goes into it,” Big Show said.
“A lot of these guys have worked hurt, like really hurt.”
